Vegetables to Plant in Fall
Don’t get depressed just because the long summer days are fading. There’s still plenty left to do in the fall garden. Autumn planting offers a wide variety of crops and the opportunity to keep your garden producing until the winter months roll in. In this article I’ll show you a short list of my favorite vegetable crops of the fall season.
My Favorite Vegetables to Plant in Fall:
- Squash – The cooler autumn weather actually works to enhance the flavor of squash fruits. The most commonly grown autumn squashes are pumpkins, but let’s not forget Spaghetti Squash. This yellow oblong squash is my personal favorite because it is a savory squash. Its stringy insides make the perfect noodles for any pasta dish!
- Broccoli – Nothing beats sitting down to a freshly picked broccoli soup on a chilly autumn evening. Broccoli plants are very productive, so you’ll always have a fresh harvest until the big freeze of winter.
- Leafy Greens – Salads are always great no matter the time of year. The Fall garden offers the opportunity to keep your salad bowl full of Romaine, Arugula and my personal favorite, Spinach.
- Cabbage – More and more frequently, I’ve seen Cabbage being categorized as a ‘super food’. If Cabbage is that good for you, why not grow some in your autumn garden?
- Onions – There are many different varieties of onions that will grow well into the fall. Onions are always a staple in my gardens.
- Leeks – This member of the Onion family does exceptionally well in the fall months. In fact, I look forward to the autumn months just for the Leek harvest! I start winter off on a full swing of leek and potato soup.
- Potatoes – Although you won’t have a fall harvest, potatoes should be planted right before the first frost of winter. By planting in the fall, you’ll be set for an early harvest of potatoes in the spring.
- Garlic – Much like potatoes, garlic cloves can be planted in the fall for an early spring harvest.
I hope that by reading this article you’ve gained a little insight into what you could keep in your garden this autumn. Don’t be held back by my list though, there’s still plenty more crops that will grow well in the fall. You can just think of my list as a ‘teaser’ to get the gardening juices flowing. Good luck and happy autumn planting!
